HTC One M8 vs Sony Xperia Z2

HTC One M8 – Aluminium rear, Gorilla Glass screen, 3 finish options
Xperia Z2 – Glass front and back, metal sides, Gorilla Glass, 3 finish options

The HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z2 have very different looks, but they’re both strong. HTC has gone for an all-metal style similar to the original HTC One, just as the Xperia Z2 takes its cues from the Xperia Z1.

The HTC is the curvier of the two, where the Xperia Z2 has perfectly flat panels that sit on its front and back. These panels are made of glass. Between the sleek-looking glass panels is a core of metal.

HTC One (M8) vs Sony Xperia Z2: What's the difference?

The HTC One (M8) has a sharper display

The HTC One (M8) comes with a 5-inch display meaning it is smaller than the 5.2-inch offering on the Sony Xperia Z2.
Both devices feature the same 1920 x 1080 resolution but due to their slight difference in size, they also offer slightly different pixel densities.
The HTC One (M8) comes with a 441ppi, while the Sony Xperia Z2 offers a 423ppi so you will get a fractionally sharper image on the HTC One (M8), however we were impressed with both displays during our first experience with them.

The Sony Xperia Z2 is thinner but slightly heavier

Both the HTC One (M8) and the Sony Xperia Z2 offer a solid, premium build. The HTC One (M8) comes with an aluminium body with the front-facing speaker design found on its predecessor and it looks great.
The Sony Xperia Z2 is also a lovely looking device and comes with a tempered glass finish with an aluminium trim. There is a plain bezel surrounding the screen that is thicker at the top and bottom compared to the sides.
The HTC One (M8) has a more curvaceous finish compared to the square style of the Xperia Z2, but you also get IP55 dust-resistance as well as IP58 waterproof certification on the Sony.
Looking at the numbers, the HTC One (M8) measures 146.36 x 70.6 x 9.35 mm and weighs 160g, while the Sony Xperia Z2 measures 146.8 x 73.3 x 8.2mm and hits the scales at 163g.
Therefore, the Sony offering is slightly thinner and heavier than the HTC One (M8) but it is also a fraction taller and a couple of millimeters wider
.

Sony Xperia Z2 offers more megapixels on rear camera but not front

The HTC One (M8) has a Duo camera on the rear, with a UltraPixel sensor that captures an image and a secondary lens to capture depth of field.
The Sony Xperia Z2 on the other hand has a 20.7-megapixel snapper on the rear, which is the same camera as the Xperia Z1 but with a range of added features including 4K video.
When it comes to the front camera, the HTC One (M8) has a 5-megapixel front snapper and the Sony Xperia Z2 offers a 2.2-megapixel front-facing camera.
It isn't possible to compare the cameras on these two devices without doing a full review on both but we will be looking them more closely when we get them in.

ame processor, but bigger battery and more RAM on Xperia Z2

Both the HTC One (M8) and the Sony Xperia Z2 come with the latest 2.3GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset, but you will find 2GB of RAM on the HTC and 3GB of RAM on the Sony.
This should mean that the Sony will be able to handle more demanding tasks slightly better thanks to its extra RAM. The processor speed on both devices should be pretty nippy though.
In terms of the battery, the HTC One (M8) comes with a 2,600mAh battery capacity that is said to last for up to 20 hours of 3G talk time and 496 hours on standby.
Meanwhile, the Sony Xperia Z2 has a 3,200mAh battery capacity, which Sony suggests will last for up to 19 hours of 3G talk time and 740 hours standby.

More storage on the HTC One (M8)

As you would expect, the HTC One (M8) and the Sony Xperia Z2 come with the usuals when it comes to connectivity. You will find Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth on board both devices.
When it comes to storage, the HTC One (M8) offers 16GB internal storage just like the Xperia Z2 and both come with microSD support for further storage expansion.
The HTC One (M8) comes out on top here though as it can support up to 128GB via its microSD slot while the Sony Xperia Z2 can only handle up to 64GB.

Both devices run on Android 4.4

The HTC One (M8) and the Sony Xperia Z2 both come with Google's latest software – Android 4.4 KitKat. You'll find the Sony skin overlay on top of the Xperia Z2 and HTC's Sense 6.0 overlay on top of the One (M8), so it will be a matter of preference as to which you like best.
The skins mean you get certain features with each device such as the Sony Walkman for music on the Xperia Z2 and BlinkFeed for all the latest news on the HTC One (M8).

Conclusion

These two devices really are neck in neck, with the Sony Xperia Z2 coming out on top in some areas and the HTC One (M8) pipping it to the post in others.
The Sony is thinner, squarer and it offers waterproofing, but the HTC is lighter, narrower and shorter with a more rounded design.
The HTC One (M8) offers a sharper display, better storage and more megapixels on its front camera but the Sony Xperia Z2 has more RAM, a larger screen, a mighty rear camera and a bigger battery capacity.
With two quite different designs, you will probably already know which you prefer but whichever you choose, you're not likely to be disappointed with either of these devices.

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact

Sony Xperia Z3 Compact – Review Iterative products are just a way of life these days. We get a new slightly updated device every few months, sometimes every six months, sometimes even every year, Sony have mastered the iterative product cycle, releasing new products every six months ensuring they stay current. A manufacturer finds a new niche or use case and sometimes it’s a hit with the consumer, the Sony Z1 Compact was one such phone, for a while to buy a small compact Android device meant you’d have to compromise on specs, build quality and design. A few companies had tried something different but none had really made a success with them. Sony last year decided to offer a high spec device in a small chassis that would appeal to those people who wanted the latest flagship spec and high performance, but didn’t want a huge great 5″+ device that needed two hands to operate. This year they’ve gone
